    I’d wager that a lot of correlations tend to break down under the independent variable that is Robert Mugabe.

The graph above is cool but in fact it is not so useful because for Zimbabwe the important rainfall parameter is not total annual/seasonal rainfall but dates of onset of rainy season and length of mid-season drought. Please don’t forget that many times we have had high annual rainfall when in fact most of it has fallen at the end of December or even in March, way after the critical periods for maize and other rainfall dependent crops.
