El Nino and the Economy

Via David Appell, a fascinating paper about El Nino and the U.S. economy:

While ENSO may briefly influence the performance of particular sectors of the economy in particular regions, as documented by the previous literature, such locally-important effects vanish into the noise surrounding macroeconomic trends in an economy as large and complex as that of the U.S.

  1. This strikes me as a strange question. If you asked whether there was an effect on agriculture or even aluminum manufacturing, maybe, but, for example, pharma, petroleum, etc. of course it is going to get buried.
