Most of the way through October, it’s been a dry start to the 2014-15 “water year”, the season in which we build the snowpack to feed the rivers of the southwestern United States. As Jonathan Overpeck says:

  1. Our wx office the other day posted a side-by-side of satellite pix from last year and this year on same calendar day, and stated our snowpack is only ~25% of normal. If this keeps up, fire year next year will be horrible. And California? fuhgeddaboudit.
