Art on the I25 bridge over the Rio Grande south of Albuquerque, Nov. 1, 2026
The camera on my new phone is dope.
I love bridge abutment graffiti, but it’s so hard to shoot because of the deep shadows and bright light. I love the geometry of the bridge structures, the way it interacts with the writing, the lines and brights and shadows, the three conceptual layers – river, and bridge, and the place making of the art, the social construction of place, as a centerpiece.
This is under the I25 bridge over the Rio Grande on this morning’s bike ride. We were trying to get to the river. The high water was overbanking under the bridge, kept us back a bit. But the bridge art was great.
I’ve struggled with electronic editing to try to overcome the light and shadow problem, with varying success. This is under the 550 Bridge at Bernalillo a couple of months ago, taken with my old phone. The geometry of the light and shadow was amazing, a Sheeler moment, but there was no way for me to get the graffiti without blowing out the morning sun on the river and far bank.

The new camera has some dynamic range magic going on in its image processing as I’m shooting that is, as I said, dope.
